AFD Instructors: Jim and Amy Gorges, Conrad Banez, Tyler Stephens
Instructor Bios:
Jim and Amy Gorges own and operate American Freedom Defense in Greencreek, Idaho. AFD is partnered with USCCA and both Jim and Amy are certified instructors with the USCCA, along with their individual certificates from NRA and Idaho POST instructor.
Jim is the primary instructor for American Freedom Defense, LLC. He retired from law enforcement in 2021 after 20 years of service, 12 of which he was an Undersheriff/Captain for Idaho County. He is a POST certified instructor and holds several LEO instructor certificates. Jim uses his instructor skills along with his real life experiences to train both civilians and LEO's at AFD.
In 2007, Jim was attacked in his home which resulted in a gun fight with the suspect while his 5 and 7 year-old children were in the same room. Jim was shot once in the arm and returned fire with two rounds which put the suspect to the ground, ending the battle. Jim credits his trainers for the successful outcome of this engagement. He is very passionate about giving citizens all the training that was available to him, so that they too can overcome and survive a violent criminal if needed.
Amy is the primary instructor for beginner classes and women only classes and assists Jim with all other levels. Amy is a certified instructor with USCCA and NRA. She credits her time at the Idaho County Sheriff's Office as a Civil Deputy for her desire to teach handgun training. She volunteered at NRA Women on Target events and also taught basic handgun courses with the intention of empowering women with confidence by training with firearms. Amy is currently employed as an Administrative Assistant at a local private school since 2012 and leads the school's Youth Gun Club. Working at the school has increased her desire to educate civilians for the purpose of self-defense, home-defense and community defense.

Conrad is AFD's medical and school security specialist. Conrad offers many classes at AFD such as "Stop the Bleed" and other combat field related medical courses. Conrad has been in charge of security for many organizations and is currently involved in school security, liability, policy and procedures.
Conrad Banez is a certified USCCA instructor (United States Concealed Carry Association) and American Freedom Defense. Conrad is passionate about training and drives to provide invaluable training that will enhance the quality of life we treasure most, and our family and friends.

Conrad specializes in advising and training corporations and facilities in emergency preparedness and planning to protect its assets.
Prior to Conrad’s career boom in Occupational Safety and Health, he joined the United States Army straight after high school and served approximately six years before being honorably discharged. His journey through the military afforded him invaluable weapons and survival training in extreme cold weather, desert and mountain operations and tactics. Conrad then worked in the private military security sector for a brief stint prior to 9/11 with Blackwater and Wackenhut Group (now G4S).
Due to a rapidly growing family and injuries that Conrad sustained in the military and as a private military security contractor (PMSC), he ventured off to pursue a career in commercial diving and became a diver medic.
Conrad’s training and experience as an Army soldier, PMSC and a deep sea commercial diver, provided him the skill set that prepared him for an enriched career as a safety professional in the construction and medical industry where his passion for teaching took off.
His desire to teach individuals, families, communities and businesses how to manage personal and professional risk exposure stems from his oath to defend this nation from enemies foreign and domestic.

Tyler is AFD's speed and accuracy instructor. Tyler is a young instructor who has a great passion for self-defense and firearms training.Tyler is our accurcy and speed expert.
Tyler has many years on the range and is a USCCA Conceal Carry and Home Defense certified instructor. Tyler is also a competition shooter and enjoys attending various meets and matches as well as hosting his own on occasion.
Tyler is sponsored by AFD as a competition shooter. His father Rick, an A class shooter at the time, competed frequently in the 1980s and 1990s, serving as a mentor to Tyler in both his competition and defensive training. Tyler has been shooting his entire life, but began training regularly in early 2020. It was at this time that he also took his first course at AFD, where he discovered his passion for instruction in firearms related training.

Range 1 pictured above
Our private facility includes a classroom area and 3 outdoor ranges. The classroom is conveniently located on the range to allow instructors to switch back and forth from range to classroom throughout the day. An eight lane 50 yard range is our primary range. This range is covered out to the 10 yard line. Our 2nd range is a 15,000 square foot shoot house. Our 3rd range is a competition range made with all steel reactive targets. Our new range 4 is a 6 lane paper and steel 25 yard range.

Range 3 is a Competition Range. This range has multicolored reactive steel targets. The targets are made of AR 500 and will return to the upright position after a hit to allow for repeat firing.
